Newport

Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight is almost centrally located on the island and is the main population centre.

Newport has a long and rich history dating back to Roman times. The town was an important trading port in medieval times and was granted royal borough status in 1377. In the 18th century, Newport became known as a fashionable resort town and many wealthy families built grand houses here.

Today, Newport is a thriving town with a lively atmosphere. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars to enjoy, as well as a variety of cultural attractions. The Isle of Wight Festival is held annually in Newport and attracts music lovers from all over the world.
